TF Whitefield all set to cycle to Barcelona for Ali

Alison Turner needs £55,000 to fund lifesaving surgery in Barcelona

Our fabulous team at Total Fitness Whitefield are getting in the saddle to help a Bury woman on her way to her £55,000 fundraising target for lifesaving surgery.

Alison Turner, known to family and friends as Ali, suffers from a complex neurological condition involving her skull and the second vertebrae in her spine, and risks dislocating her neck on a daily basis.

Ali’s partner Nick set up a GoFundMe page ( in October last year to help raise the vital funds to get Ali to Barcelona for the surgery, which isn’t currently available in the UK.

The team at Total Fitness Whitefield, alongside customers and members of the public, are aiming to cycle the distance from Bury to Barcelona on exercise bikes in the gym’s foyer – all 1,853km of it!

A children’s exercise bike will also be available for families who want to take part together in exchange for donations towards the cause.

There’s also the chance to win a year’s membership at TF Whitefield – all you have to do is make a £5 donation and you’ll enter the prize draw at the end of the cycle.

The bikes will be in place at the Bury New Road gym from Monday 20th February until all 1,853km have been completed – the team is expecting to be finished by Friday 24th February by pedalling around 370km per day.

Helena Taylor, General Manager of TF Whitefield, said: “When we heard about Ali’s condition and the fundraising that was happening to help her, we knew we had to step in and help in any way we could.

“We’re all up for the challenge and we’re looking forward to seeing our members and the general public popping in to clock up some of the distance – we’ll get there between us.”

Ali’s partner Nick added: “Each day is a battle for survival for Ali and she’s often in in debilitating, unimaginable pain, but knowing so many people care about her has given her such a boost.

“Her condition has left her unable to carry out even the simplest household task and she wears a specialised neck brace most of the time. We’re hoping to get her to Barcelona for the surgery so she can be ‘Ali’ again and we’re so grateful for the support.”
