Your genes play a large part in your metabolism but you can rev it up naturally by eating the right stuff.

Just by adding metabolism-boosting foods and drinks to your diet, you can give your body a kick-start in calorie burning, and speed up that seemingly slow metabolism of yours.


This is metabolism-boosting 101! Drinking water can increase your metabolic rate by up to 30 percent, so even if you’re only slightly dehydrated, your metabolism can start to grind to a halt.

Increasing your fluid intake can help your body break down fat more effectively, plus we’re often thirsty when we feel hungry so water can help suppress your appetite.

Total tip: Drink water cold – this forces your body to use more calories to warm it up.

Lean meat

Lean meats such as chicken are full of iron, so if your iron stores are running low on it can slow your metabolism right down.

These foods are also packed with protein, an essential ingredient in building lean muscle mass which burns more calories than fat.

Total tip: Aim to eat three to four servings of iron-rich foods each day – mix it up and include red meat and pork.


All fruits are a good addition to your diet due to their carb and fibre content, both of which are important tools for boosting metabolism.

But the power of berries in particular is not to be ignored – because they’re rich in antioxidants like vitamin C, they help to combat those pesky free radicals that we generate during exercise.

Total tip: Berries help you heal more quickly, so make sure you keep topped up with these if you’re recovering from an injury or operation.


Although they are high in calories (so don’t overdo it!) almonds contain fatty acids that help to boost your metabolism.

They are rich in protein, just like lean meats, so they help your body to burn more calories after you eat them.

Total tip: Have some almonds to hand to snack on through your day.

Low-fat yoghurt

This is one of the best foods to eat if you're trying to give your metabolism a boost.

Yoghurt is full of calcium and protein – it gives you the energy you need to keep going all day and helps you build lean muscle mass, which in turn helps your body to burn more calories.

Total tip: Adding yoghurt to your diet can also help regulate your digestion.


Last but by no means least… chocolate is good for you! Dark chocolate (70% cocoa or higher) can help boost your metabolism.

Raw cocoa is one of the best food sources of magnesium, which helps to stimulate the fat-burning hormone adiponectin.

Total tip: As with all sweets, less is better, but a bit of dark chocolate won’t hurt your efforts.
