Whether you remember the Thighmaster, the start of the Zumba craze or when the Wii was the workout of choice, with a new year usually comes a new fitness trend.

2017 is the perfect time to experiment and find something new that you love. Keeping things fresh and exciting will help you stay motivated throughout January and beyond!


We know Yoga isn’t anything new, but it’s just as popular as ever and this looks set to continue well into 2017.

This is because the benefits of yoga are vast – it helps to decrease anxiety and stress, improves sleep quality, allows blood to flow through the body better, helps digestion and so much more.

In fact, practicing yoga changes your brain. It increases the “chill-out” neurotransmitter in your brain, a chemical that’s in low supply for people who suffer from depression and anxiety.

Bodyweight Training

This is looking set to be a popular one in 2017 and for good reason.

You don’t need fancy equipment for these workouts (because you use your body weight) so they’re perfect for you to try if you’re put off by those classes where everyone is swinging a kettlebell and you’ve no idea what’s going on.

The exercises can always be modified to your fitness level as well, so it doesn’t matter if you’re a complete beginner.

High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)

Considering so many of us are strapped for time these days, it’s no wonder that the popularity of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) looks set to grow in 2017.

Instead of spending loads of time on the treadmill or cross trainer at a moderate pace, HIIT is all about short bursts of exercise at maximum or near-maximum heart rate, followed by short rests.

This exercise undoubtedly gives you more bang for your buck – you’ll burn more calories in 20-30 minutes than you would in a longer session, leaving you with plenty of time to chill out afterwards.

Group Training

If you normally hit the gym on your own and you feel like you’ve hit a plateau, 2017 could be the year to try group training to reach a new fitness goal.

Ultimately, group training makes trying a brand new exercise more fun.

Whether you bring a friend along or you’re inspired to push that bit harder thanks to an experienced instructor, involving others can be a great motivation tool.

Plus, a little friendly competition can only be a good thing!
